Back in 2003, I started writing my first book, 100 Ways to Become Your Personal Best: Blueprint Edition. At the time, I wanted to share everything I had learned from professional hockey, coaching, leadership, business, and personal growth.

In 2012, the book was picked up by a writer/editor and made available on Amazon.

Like many first-time authors, I believed that the more information I could provide, the more I could help people. Looking back, I’ve learned something different.

Success isn’t about collecting more information.

Over the years, I have worked with athletes, business professionals, leaders, and teams from many different backgrounds. While their goals were different, I noticed a common pattern.

I never had a book called The Blueprint for Success. I did write a book in 2003 called A Hundred Ways to Become Your Personal Best Blueprint Edition. And we did these hundred ways, and uh it was great. I really wrote it for my kids. The first book I did on my own, and the second one, an editor came and took it over and used their account. In fact, it hasn't even been in my account in years, so I sold it on Amazon. We did okay. Uh, did a when I did my keynote speaking or presentations or with the bank, we would buy a bunch of them, give them out. But again, I really didn't do too much and I shut my account down, so I don't even think it's on Amazon. I'm gonna now you're uh piquing my interest here, then I'm gonna go look. But a hundred ways to become your personal best, and it was interesting because back in the day, Don Luce, who drafted me uh to the Buffalo Sabres in in 1986, he asked me, Why did you do a hundred ways? Why not just do one way? And I said, That's a good question. But the the question was the reason I did was because I took a little bit from everybody I learned from. And I played with some great players, uh, whether it was in junior hockey, uh, my midget hockey coach, uh, my one of my fifth-grade teacher, uh, just people that were uh big impact in my life. My parents, uh you name it, of course, Scotty Bowman, Mike Keenan, uh Phil Esposito, uh Terry Crisp, uh Ted Seder, Rick Douglas, all these great coaches I had, I took a lot of information from. In fact, at the end of the year, I would ask some of the coaches for for their playbook, and Bob Hartley gave me his playbook back in the day. Uh, and he was a great, great coach, and even in fact, a great development coach. So that's why I did it, and I took a little bit from everybody, people I've I would learn from, because I always believed you could learn from everybody, and the big part was journaling. I used it to journal. I used to journal since I was uh I think 17 years old. Players used to ask me, is that your diary? And I would say no. And I one thing I learned, the one thing I did learn is I did not journal at home too much. Because back then we were when even when I was younger or even playing in the NHL, I said my home time was for getting away from the rink. I didn't want to think about it. Didn't want to think about hockey at all until you know, unless it's a day of a game and you have your your pregame nap and your meal, and that's one thing. But I didn't want to think about it. Home was a place to to be your home. So I would do it at the rink or I would do it at a restaurant. Primarily, I would do it at a if I was by myself uh at a restaurant, which I used to do a lot when I played in the NHL and I would journal. Guys used to joke, is that your diary? So that's it for the book. I'm just giving you the long-winded answer. But uh, you know, if I was gonna give you one thing to think about, and it's uh, you know, if I'm gonna give you a tip today, because uh when I answer the questions, I still want to give a mindset tip. Or but today I'm gonna go a little bit different. It's really what do you value? How do you value yourself? So let's talk about core values that that mean something to you, like you know, discipline, effort. Do you value yourself? Do you have appreciation for yourself? Uh, are you accountable? Um, how about your teamwork skills? Are you uh how do you value your team and your teammates? Uh you do it with uh integrity or how about resiliency? So those are things that I'm gonna ask you about today, and a lot about values is just making good decisions, especially if you're a young athlete. Uh one bad decision could end everything, and the same working within a company. One bad decision, one thing said. So I remember one of the hundred ways going back is think before you speak, because what you say can never be taken back, and that's the truth. Really think before you speak. I mean, now in the A the day, the days like now, like with AI, you could say, okay, I want to be a hockey coach, a mindset hockey coach, and let's put in uh 200 ways to be a great hockey coach, and it's gonna give you great answers. Where we didn't have that in the day. So, values are really important, and people could read through that. Like any person that's been at a high level could read through whether you're an executive at a high level, or you're some of the people I mentioned, or even my general manager Neil Smith back in the day with the New York Rangers, you could read through the fluff pretty easy with things, so you're not fooling anybody when you're doing certain things, but make sure you have your values lined up because I think that's the most important thing. Uh, number one, you could talk about good habits and mindset and different things all we want, but if you don't have values, you don't have anything, and that's just my tip for today. Uh, please keep reaching out if you have any questions. We would love to answer them. We'll do our best to get to them. We had a handful come in. I'm glad I put that little I just did that. I just put the uh the button up there to allow uh QA. So uh keep reaching out. I had some friends play some jokes on me recently, but uh besides that, that's okay too. So feel free to reach out, and if I could help you in any way, uh, I will do.
